Our Inventor

Agrizest was invented by Nathan Balasingham. Nathan graduated from Massey University with a first class Masters Degree in Horticultural Science and is an entrepreneurial scientist with over 30 years product and market development success.

During his career Nathan has held industry positions as:

  • Technical Director
  • Profit Centre Manager
  • Research Scientist
  • R&D Manager; and
  • Various roles in Production and Project Management.
  • Nathan has also been an orchard manager and owner.

Achievements
  • 1992 Food Awards, including the NZ Premier Food Award for a kiwifruit juice drink product he designed and patented Kiwi Crush

  • Agrizest was a finalist in the Price Waterhouse Coopers New Zealand High Tec Awards 2007
  • Discovered an innate selective mechanism in plants against the effects of herbicides.
  • Worked as an associate scientist with Roger Slack to establish the biochemical pathway in fatty acid synthesis.
  • Applied the knowledge in breeding cold tolerant oil seed plants for NZ conditions.
  • First to research and register insecticides and fungicides for the Kiwifruit Industry.

  • Discovered the cause for leaf necrosis in kiwifruit and provided management solutions.

  • Discovered the cause of browning in fried Kumara and provided a solution.

  • Discovered and patented a Juice Production Method that preserved the flavour and colour of the juice.

  • Patent registered a method to store Kiwifruit that allowed the extension of the marketing season.

  • Devised method to rejuvenate large stumps from over 50 year old imported Dracaena plants

  • Devised a method to inject insecticide directly into plants and mitigate the contamination of the environment.

  • Introduced a method to manipulate flowering of Bromeliads so that they can be used as a flowering plant indoors all year round.

  • Developed application technologies for a bioremediation product.

  • Invented and patented Agrizest: a product that reduces the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers in intensive farming and horticulture.
